letters to maddie

dear sweet maddie,

i'm going to give you three reasons you may come out to play now.

  1. uncle T and i are on our way. after sunday we're in louisville for good!
  2. you're mother is severely uncomfortable.
  3. you really don't want to compete with oaks/derby. trust me.
if you're anything like your momma you'll take your time and make a good decision by weighing the pros and cons. i trust that you'll make the right choice, though!

i'm keeping today's letter short and sweet because grown-up life is a little cray, cray at the moment. but know that i love you, i'm ready and for goodness sakes, your momma is very, very, very ready!

love,

ash

ps. can you be as funny as this baby? thanks.

letters to maddie

dear sweet maddie,

life can be hard sometimes. it's not always fair and you might find yourself doubting everything you know.

some people are mean. they say mean things and do mean things and expect you to just get over it.

sometimes the people you love and who love you will say or do something that's night so nice.

but it doesn't mean that they don't love you.

you have to just keep on going. keep smiling. keep swimming.

promise me you'll never let anyone dull your sparkle, mmmmmmmkay?

awesome!

love,

ash

p.s. if anyone is ever mean to you...i'll beat them up. end of discussion.

letters to maddie

dear sweet maddie,

great news maddie girl!

uncle T and i are moving to louisville!

can you believe it?

no? me neither.

i'm having a hard time comprehending it all but it's real.

uncle T got a new job and i've given notice on my job in lexington. it's coming so soon. this weekend we're looking for houses. hopefully we'll be near you and your parents. then i can come and see you anytime i want. and also, give your momma a break from laundry and cooking and cleaning and holding you!

we'll be there (and hopefully all settled in) before you get here. you can come over any time you like. sleepovers? you betcha!

it's funny how life throws you curve balls. but you know what? you just have to swing. and keep swinging until you hit a homerun.

and hit one we did!

love,
ash

letters to maddie

dear sweet maddie,

there's no time for letters this week.

i think i told you a little thing about march madness last week and how we all bleed blue.

i should have also mentioned that there's a holiday in the middle of march.

if you need me (which you better not!) i'll be watching basketball. just have your momma call me.

i hope you'll understand.

love,
ash

letters to maddie

dear sweet maddie,

today is a very important day in the bluegrass. UK is playing their first game in the SEC tournament.

what's the SEC? oh girl!

you'll soon learn all about the university of kentucky, wildcats. and just what it means to bleed blue. you'll soon find your grandpa puckett yelling at the tv, telling the boys to play defense. you're mommy and i will pretend we're watching the game while really we'll be chit chatting and playing with you. you'll be prompted to go to UK from birth. i'm sure if you don't already, you will have more blue and white in your wardrobe then you need. and soon enough, you'll bleed blue too girl!

so while you're still in utero get used to it. embrace it. love it.

you will. oh yes, you will.

love,
ash

letters to maddie

dear sweet maddie,

two important things about today.

one you'll learn to care about,

and the other,

you must care about or we can't be friends.

1. today is dr. seuss' birthday. you'll learn to love this man in time. he's the greatest children's book author of all time (in my opinion and many others!) and you'll probably have all his books before you're even born.

you'll count and rhyme and learn colors and numbers and go on all kinds of adventures with the seuss. you'll even watch movies from his books and maybe one day i'll teach you to laugh like the grinch.

2. today is also texas independence day. march 2, 1836. i'm a texan through and through. don't cry because you're not. we can't all be texans but we can all love texas. uncle T and i will teach you to root for the cowboys and love rangers baseball (you can eat ice cream out of a plastic baseball helmet for goodness sakes!). we'll also buy you some cowboy boots and a hat. when you're ready. and if i can ever get your mother to travel with me, we'll go to texas.

you'll love it down there. except when it's hot. well, it's always hot. but when it's HOT we won't be there. you can borrow my pat green cd any time you like and i'll read you all the books i own (10) about GWB. if i have anything to do with it, you'll have an undying love for him, just like your aunt ash. and you have to say y'all. it's the most important thing a texan does.

love,
ash

letters to maddie

dear sweet maddie,

it's almost spring in the bluegrass.

spring isn't my favorite season (fall is. i don't want the suspense to kill you.) but i do love the change of seasons.

spring is great for so many reasons. new plants bud. the animals come out from hibernation. spring break. sunshine. driving with the windows down. and new life. more specifically, your new life.

your momma's at 29 weeks now and you're getting so close to being here.

this spring will bring lots of changes.

so i'm ready.

ready for spring. ready for change. ready for you to come out and play (although, i know it's in your best interest to stay in there and cook for a bit longer. no one wants an under cooked baby.).

love,
ash

letters to maddie

dear sweet maddie,

i'm going to tell you about last saturday.

last saturday uncle T and i had our engagement party. it was great and we got to see a lot of our family and friends. we got presents and played games and ate cake.

fun was had all around.

then aunt ash had too much to drink. you know, too much formula. adult formula. and might have done some silly things.

normally i wouldn't tell a fetus about this BUT since greek runs in your blood and you'll be born a little panda in 12 short weeks, i figure this is something you must know.

here's a list of things that may or may not have happened...

i may or may not have kissed your mother's belly several times.

i may or may not have taken several pictures of josh's beard.

i may or may not have pulled my spanx off in the middle of the party.

i may or may not have had three cupcakes.

i may or may not have been playing with a very large knife to cut the cake.

i may or may not have let T answer all of the questions to the game. terrible, horrible idea.

i may or may not have stayed up until 3 am.

i may or may not have taken several bad photos because my face turns into a red mess when i drink.

i may or may not made fun of someone in the most cruel way ever.

i may or may not have shushed T. more than once.

i may or may not have accused someone of being on drugs.

i may or may not have had the best time. ever.

but you can keep all this a secret, right? i trust you baby girl. i mean, you don't want to rat out your favorite aunt. the one that will bail you out of anything and everything when you're bigger. in fact, it's in your very best interest to stay on my good side at all times, mad. mmmmmkay?

and a party we did, indeed, go to!

ps. i am in no way saying that i am a drunk. i'm not. yes, i had a little bit too much fun. and that's all it was, fun. also, i do not at all endorse babies getting drunk or being alcoholics. however, i guess it's really the choice of the baby and it's parents. since i am not a baby nor do i have a baby, i cannot speak on their behalf.

letters to maddie

dear sweet maddie,

remember how i said i'd tell you that story about your mom running down rose street at 3am? well, she said she'd kill me if i told you over this here internets, so i'll be saving that one for the day you're born.

i do however have to tell you this.

i was thinking yesterday that your momma is going to need a playlist for the hospital. i have decided to make this my personal job. to find the best, most appropriate songs for you to come into the world with.

oh wait, appropriate? never. but, here's what i have come up with. and if you're at all cool (like i know you are), you'll love them!

Ain't That Loving You Baby - Elvis Presley

Baby - Justin Bieber

Baby, Baby - Amy Grant

Baby, Baby, Baby - TLC

Baby Come Close - Smokey Robbinson

Baby, Don't Forget My Number - Milli Vanilli

Baby Got Back - Sir Mix-A-Lot

Baby I Need Your Lovin' - Johnny Rivers

Baby, Please Don't Go - ACDC

Be My Baby - The Ronettes

Hey Baby - No Doubt

and my personal favorite,

letters to maddie

dear sweet maddie,

today i want to tell you a little story.

you're mom and i joined the same sorority in the fall of 2004. but we didn't actually become friends until the fall of 2005.

she already had a little group of her own. i didn't. long story, sweetie, but just remember girls with boy names are usually trouble.

yeah, some day ask me about greek sing. you'll pee your pants over it.

i can't remember how we actually became friends but when we did, woah! we were fast friends.

we've been best friends now for almost 7 years and i can't imagine my life without her.

moral of the story?

join a sorority. it's not just about the booze, the boys, the parties, the t-shirts and craziness.

it's so much more than that.

it's about best friends. true bffl's, if you ask me!

love,
ash

p.s. next week i'll tell you all about how your momma ran down rose street at 3 am. see, sororities are awesome!

letters to maddie

dear sweet maddie,

it's true. like so true, you'll never know how much you're actually loved. and by so many. like, way too many to name. and as much as i already love you, you're mom and dad love you so much more. they're great. like, really, really great. you're gonna love them. get ready girl, you've got fifteen weeks left and then it'll be time to start your life full of love!

letters to maddie

dear sweet maddie,

let me start with a hello! i'm your momma's best friend and therefore i'll be your favorite person before you know it. i can't wait for you to get here so i can put you in all kinds of girls creations that i'm making. you see, i don't have kids and don't plan to for a while so you're it kid. everything will be about you soon. and while i'm a little worried about that (for fear that i can't call your momma 18 times a day or drop by anytime i want or take your mom out and get drunk and do stupid crap  all day friends or harry potter marathons) i'm sure that you and i will get along wonderfully. oh who am i kidding. you're going to love me! and i'll love you too and we'll do all those fun things together.

in order for you to fit right in i'll need you to brush up on this...

and get used to these...

and you should probably try to learn all the words to this movie...

you'll soon learn about all the cool things in this world. like UK, AOII, sarcasm, cake, weddings and gossip. being a girl is pretty great. it can suck too but we'll talk about that when you're like 13 or so.

i'm going to teach you so many things. like how to do your hair and make-up, talk in one syllable words, totes, and how to be really funny. also, you'll need me when you want to go shopping because, while i love your mother, it's not her strong suit. it's ok. she knows!

you can come stay at auntie ash and uncle T's house anytime you like. oh who's T? well he's awesome and you'll love him. and one day when we produce our own offspring, you'll love them too. but try not to be too mean to them since you'll be older (like, a lot older). although being older kind of gives you a right to be mean sometimes, so i won't judge.

you'll be here in just over 4 months. and there's a lot going on between now and then but there's some awesome stuff happening after you get here and you'll just go bananas over it.

1. most importantly, my wedding. duh, i know you totally understand. it's going to be great and you'll get to do all the great stuff with us. if i could convince your mom, you'd come to the bachelorette party too but she thinks it's not kid friendly. pshhhh.

2. being born in may gives you the opportunity to see some pretty great holidays. july 4th, halloween, thanksgiving and christmas. heck, you'll be almost 8 months when santa comes, you lucky, lucky girl!

3. the summer olympics are back this year and we'll be spending a lot of time in front of the tv watching gymnastics and swimming. because, let's face it, no one likes the other events.

4. i started sewing over a year ago and am actually pretty good (oh, it's ok to toot your own horn every once in a while) and that means you'll be getting some awesome gifts. and i'll teach you how to sew when you're ready.

5. it's an election year and by golly i'll make you a little republican baby if it kills me.

there's so much more to tell you and show you so i'll be writing you a letter every week until you get here. you're going to love it. i'll share secrets about your mommy and tell you all about how cool we are.

one things for sure kid, you're gonna be loved. like crazy.

i can't even wait!

love, ash
